22 march 2022 Wegmans is STILL out of gummy bears so I made this cake. I made it from ingredients I had (mostly) on hand, and for no absolutely reason other than I was inspired to do so ~ because I’m not really a baker. Especially of cakes. But for some reason Roxanne Gay’s irreverence made it all feel possible: I believed I was capable of baking a cake, as long as I became willing to try. And really, what better reminder is there than to consider everything we do: yoga, writing, cooking, fill in your blank to simply be a practice of making and Every act of making matters. How we make matters. I like to remember, and remark with regularity, that the word “making” occupies seventeen pages in the Oxford English Dictionary, so there are multiple possibilities for a lifetime of making: make a cup, a conversation, a building, an institution, make memory, make peace, make a poem, a song, a drawing, a play; make a metaphor that changes, enlarges, or inverts the way we understand or see something. Make something to change your mind — acts that amplify. Ann Hamilton
Yesterday, baking became my act to amplify, my act to nourish myself. And while I may not have had every tool, nor followed every step perfectly and I may have had to made an extra batch of butter cream frosting I baked this cake, and it was delicious from start to finish. It still is.
