24 May 2021 Dear Friends & Readers, Recently I had the privilege to interview Stacy Morrison about her art making process and creative practice for Instruments of Memory ~ We spoke about stories: the stories we tell the stories we keep and the stories we keep to ourselves You can read our full conversation here When I asked Stacy what was her favorite instrument of memory she replied, lockets for what is inside always lies close to your heart. So too, our stories. Stories become the means to know and heal our relationship with ourselves, to get to know all the pieces all the more. I began this project, exactly a year ago, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, in a time of public protest and private reckoning, because I found myself at a loss for words because it felt as if there were no words because sometimes we need to learn a new language before we can begin to speak. This is what I have tried to offer faithfully over the past year through bimonthly writing circles: a space to gather in grace to share in safety to pause to meditate to write our way through our stories to greet ourselves What are the ways that you too have become lost and found? What is it that you have come to hold close to your heart? This project and process has changed me in more ways than one: I have gone back to school to become a practitioner of Narrative Medicine. I have become willing to call myself a writer, to be restored through story. And this summer is different than last. I imagine yours might be different too To gather in grace is equally to evolve: to embrace the constancy of change with curiosity, fierce courage, and tender discipline. This summer, to be fully present and support significant events in the lives of those I love, while I will continue to offer writing circles, they will occur with less regularity.
